Since 1996, Mr. Paz-Soldan has helped secure beneficial fisheries and Alaska Native legislation for clients in Alaska. He has worked with the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC), the US-Canada International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the US Congress in strengthening coastal community protections in various fisheries, in particular the Bering Sea halibut and crab fisheries.
Concerning Alaska Native legislation, Mr. Paz-Soldan participated in the establishment of the Western Alaska Community Development Association (WACDA) and in implementing the Community Development Quota (CDQ) provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 2006. On behalf of the community of Saint Paul Island, he was part of the effort that led to enactment of the Pribilof Island Transition Act of 2000, which focused on addressing federal obligations to the Pribilof Aleuts resulting from the phase-out of the commercial fur seal harvest in 1984.
Mr. Paz-Soldan has also advised Alaskan clients in obtaining harbor and infrastructure appropriations, federal loans, and air transportation issues.
